ADVANCED CLIMBING: Multi-Pitch

Challenge yourself on “La Hoz,” a highly technical climbing route carved into the stunning multicolored basalt walls of the San Martín canyon, near Baños. This volcanic rock formation offers up to three pitches, ranging in difficulty from V+/6a to V+/6c, and is considered one of Ecuador’s toughest traditional climbing routes.

Perfect for experienced and professional climbers seeking technical precision, physical demand, and breathtaking scenery next to the roaring Pastaza River.

Tour Plan / Itinerary

Duration: Half Day

Departure: 09:00 AM from Baños

Return: Approx. 1:00 PM

Altitude: 1,800 m (canyon base level)

Activity Level: Advanced – multi-pitch technical route, rope work, self-belaying, and coordination on vertical, cracked terrain

Best for: Experienced basalt rock climbers with solid technique and high physical and mental endurance

 

09:00 – Pickup in Baños and transfer to San Martín Adventure Park (15 min)

Safety briefing: Introduction to the natural wall, safety protocols, and gear check

Climb begins – Multi-Pitch Route (100 m / 328 ft)

Pitch 1: 10 m diagonal traverse (V+/6a) with mixed features and slight exposure
Pitch 2: 15 m vertical section with smooth volcanic rock
Pitch 3: Approach to the crest with natural ledges and anchoring points

Rappel & descent using single or double rope setups, guided and supervised

Return to the park base, gear debrief, and wrap-up

Transfer back to Baños
 

Recommendations:

·        Sportswear and flexible climbing pants

·        Lightweight backpack, 1 L of water, energy bar, camera, sunscreen

·        Avoid physical exhaustion the day before

      Minimum experience: intermediate level required (previous multi-pitch and technical terrain experience mandatory)
