Live the unforgettable experience of conquering the summit of Chimborazo, the highest mountain in Ecuador (6,263 m / 20,548 ft) and the closest point to the sun from the center of the Earth.
This expedition is designed for passionate mountaineers seeking a true challenge and a unique reward: witnessing the sunrise from the roof of the Andean world, surrounded by stars, glaciers, and unmatched energy.
Elevation range: 4,850 m – 6,263 m / 15,912 – 20,548 ft.
Average ascent time on summit day: 7–8 hours up, 3–4 hours down.
Average slope: 30–45 degrees.
Average temperatures: -3°F / 26°F (base camp) to -15°C / 5°F (summit)
Best months: May – July, November – February.
We will meet in Riobamba at 10:30 a.m. for an equipment check. Then, we will depart for the 1-hour drive to the Chimborazo Reserve, with a stop along the way for lunch. Our vehicle will take you to the Carrel Hut at 4,850 m / 15,912 ft.
We’ll set out from the hut and hike for 2 to 2.5 hours to high camp (Stubel, 5,350 m / 17,553 ft), carrying our own gear or with the help of porters (optional). We spend the afternoon enjoying a spectacular view of the sunset over the Andes. Our certified guides will give a safety briefing covering all the technical details of the ascent. After a hearty dinner, we’ll rest in dome tents until midnight.
We begin the ascent under the light of the moon and stars. We’ll climb over mixed terrain of rock, snow, and ice until we reach the Veintimilla summit (6,227 m / 20,429 ft). If conditions are favorable and you still have energy, you can continue on to the highest peak: Whymper (6,263 m / 20,548 ft). The descent takes between 3 and 4 hours. Breakfast will be served at camp or at the refuge, and then we’ll return to Riobamba, arriving around noon.
