The Tungurahua Geopark

This impressive territory, recognized by UNESCO as a Global Geopark, includes several cantons of the Tungurahua province: Baños de Agua Santa, Patate, Pelileo, Mocha, Quero, Cevallos, and Tisaleo. Its undeniable protagonist: the imposing Tungurahua volcano, which has shaped not only the landscape but also the identity and culture of its people.

What is a Geopark?

A Geopark is a territory with exceptional geological heritage that promotes sustainable development through tourism, education, and conservation. In Tungurahua, this initiative drives the connection between nature, science, and local communities, creating economic opportunities while protecting the environment.

UNESCO Designation: A Milestone That Makes a Difference

On April 11, 2025, after 13 years of collaborative effort among the cantons of Baños, Patate, Pelileo, Guano, and Penipe, and the provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo, UNESCO officially designated this territory as a Global Geopark.
Ecuador now has three global geoparks, leading South America in geopark density by land area.

Ancient Geological Heritage: 417 Million Years in One Landscape

This 2,397 km² territory tells a geological story that begins in the Devonian period. It includes:

  • 6 volcanoes (active Tungurahua, Chimborazo, Altar, Mul Mul, Igualata, and more)
  • 20 geosites: canyons, lava flows, waterfalls, lagoons, and hot springs (such as Pailón del Diablo, Ojo del Fantasma, and Laguna Amarilla)

Sustainable Tourism and “Geoamigos”: A Diverse and Responsible Offer

With over 50 “geoamigos” (local partners), small businesses offer lodging, food, guiding services, and locally made crafts.

Examples include:

  • Adventure lodging (Guaytambos Lodge, Napolitano Apart Hotel Spa)
  • Themed café “Casa del Volcán,” promoting regional identity and commerce
  • Popular activities include trekking, hiking, rafting, camping, and low-impact thermal baths

What Makes the Tungurahua Geopark Unique?

  1. Striking Geodiversity: Formed by craters, volcanic formations, hot springs, canyons, and waterfalls. Highlights include Agoyán Waterfall, Mano de Dios Viewpoint, and the trails surrounding the Tungurahua volcano.
  2. Living and Ancestral Culture: The Geopark preserves the heritage of Indigenous peoples such as the Panzaleos and Kichwas. Their knowledge, festivals, cuisine, and crafts enrich the visitor experience.
  3. Accessible Education and Science: Educational activities are promoted for schools, universities, and tourists — including geological routes, volcanology workshops, and experiences with Indigenous communities.
  4. Sustainable and Adventure Tourism: From eco-hiking to rafting, canopy, or thermal baths, every activity in the Geopark is designed to connect visitors with the land and its history.

Science, Education, and Conservation

The Geopark is a large open-air classroom, promoting volcanic research, ecological conservation, and environmental education. Its rich biodiversity and ecosystems — including part of Sangay National Park — make it a key area for the study of flora, fauna, and environmental changes.

Tourism Potential: Why It Attracts Visitors and Scientists

  • International Recognition: The UNESCO label strengthens its reputation.
  • Variety of Experiences: Adventure, culture, science, and ecotourism all in one destination.
  • Local Economic Development: Encourages opportunities for rural entrepreneurs.
  • High Sustainability Potential: Maintains a balance between tourism flow and environmental protection.

The Tungurahua Volcano Geopark Emerges as a High-Potential Tourist Destination in Ecuador:

  • Globally recognized for its geocultural value
  • A spectacular, ancient landscape offering experiences for all types of travelers
  • A driver of economic and community development based on sustainability
  • A living setting for scientific learning and discovery
